Video Archive
Video Archive comprises 2,285 analog video tapes including Paik’s single channel video works and footages. Consisting of videos Paik had kept and used in his studio on Mercer street in New York, this Video Archive is the only archival materials of Paik’s video art in the world. Nam June Paik Art Center acquired this video archive collection directly from Nam June Paik in 2003. Highlights include: different editions and sources of Paik’s single channel video works, performance videos, video sculptures and installation sources, collaborative works and practices with fellow video artists, broadcast recordings, home videos and purchased movie videos. Video Archive collections include analog videotapes in various formats, including Open-Reel, U-Matic, Video 8, Betacam SP, Betacam and among others. Pak’s single channel video works, such as Global Groove(1973), A Tribute to John Cage(1973/1976), Suite 212(1975/1977), Guadalcanal Requiem(1977/1979) and Good Morning Mr. Orwell(1984), are included in the Video Archive. Nam June Paik Art Center Video Archive helps researchers to explore the trajectory of Paik’s art through various editions of video works and footages as well as performance records.
Videotape Analysis
Nam June Paik Art Center has conducted analysis on the editing techniques and sequences of Paik’s major video works included in the Video Archive. Our analysis will serve as the basis for research into Paik’s video work.
