Nam June Paik Archive
Nam June Paik Archive comprises primary materials held Paik’s colleagues, friends and collectors. This special collection consists of correspondence, plans and drawings, photographs and films, exhibition posters, brochures, catalogues and Fluxus editions. Nam June Paik Art Center acquires these collections through donations and purchases. Nam June Paik Archive is a valuable research resource on Paik’s life and art.
Finding Aid
Nam June Paik Archive collections are arranged according to each creator. Each collection is titled after the name of the creator. Archive collections, a group of historical records organically accumulated, contain unpublished primary materials like a range of documents, images and videos, and secondary materials such as catalogues, brochures, posters and editioned works. A Finding Aid, a descriptive document of archive collection, is a user guide including overviews and details of each collection. Each Finding Aid includes a collection creator, collection overview, dates of collection, abstracts and a list of items.

Shuya Abe Collection

Collection Overview: Born in 1932, a Japanese technician Shuya Abe (Abe) had collaborated with Nam June Paik (NJP) since 1963. Their collaborative works include Paik-Abe Video Synthesizer (1969) and Robot K- 456 (1964). Abe worked as a professional technician at Tokyo Broadcasting System, California Institute of Arts, Toyo Laboratory, and IMAGICA. Abe also taught at Musashino Art University. Shuya Abe collection spans the years 1963-2010(bulk 1971-2001) and consists of 0.6 cubic meter of records collected by Abe. The collection includes correspondence between NJP and Abe, circuit drawings by Abe, drawings and prints by NJP, brochures and catalogs of NJP’s exhibition, scrap materials regarding NJP, and private gifts from NJP to Abe.

Sinsung Electronics Collection

Collection Overview: As a professional video installation company, Sinsung Electronics had involved with Nam June Paik (NJP) for over decades. Major artwork with NJP was The More The Better installed at National Museum of Contemporary Art, Korea. Sinsung Electronics collection spans the years 1971-1999 (bulk 1992-1995) and contains 0.25 cubic meter of records. The collection consists of NJP’s video work source laser discs, brochures of NJP’s exhibition or performance, and news clippings.

Gallery Won Collection

Collection Overview: Since its opening in 1978, Gallery Won has organized exhibitions of Korean contemporary artists as well as internationally renowned artists, introduced foreign-based Korean artists to Korean art scene, and supported emerging artists. Gallery Won also provides multi/cross-genre art featured space. The gallery relocated from Insa-dong to Chungdamdong in 1994. Gallery Won collection spans the years 1973-1993(bulk 1988-1992) and consists of 2.5 cubic meter of records collected by Gallery Won. The collection includes media materials for exhibitions of Nam June Paik at the Gallery Won, photo files of installation and opening exhibitions, objects collected for Nam June Paik’s art work, and publications presented by Nam June Paik.

Mary Bauermeister Collection

Collection Overview: Born in Germany in 1932, Mary Bauermeister (Bauermeister) is one of Fluxus artists based in Germany and the USA. Bauermeister opened Mary Bauermeister Studio (Atelier Mary Bauermeister) in 1960 and supported and planned concerts, happenings, and performances. In 1961, Bauermeister participated as a painter in the , which was created by Karlheinz Stockhausen, with Nam June Paik (NJP) acting in the performance. After relocated in New York in 1962, Bauermeister exhibited her works at Galeria Bonino and among others. Since moving back to Germany in 1972, Bauermeister has occupied herself with marginal science and pursued her artwork in the similar context. Mary Bauermeister collection spans the years 1960-2009(bulk 1966-1972) and consists of 0.3 cubic meter of records created and collected by Bauermeister. The collection includes correspondence between NJP and Bauermeister, publications and photocopies of photographs owned by Bauermeister.

Erik Andersch Collection

Collection Overview: Born in Dusseldorf, Erik Andersch (Andersch) is a collector specializing in Fluxus. Influenced by Robert Filliou, who was a friend of Andersch’s, Andersch started collecting artworks. Robert Filliou introduced George Brecht, Takako Saito, André Thomkins, and Nam June Paik to Andersch. The scope of Andersch’s art collection began with first editioned prints and editioned multiples, and was expanded to out-of-print publications. Erik Andersch collection spans the years 1961-2008 and consists of 0.6 cubic meter of records collected by Andersch. The collection includes Fluxus documents and graphics, prints, posters, financial and legal documents on Nam June Paik’s housing in Germany, and scrap materials.

Collection Overview: Curt Schulz (Schulz) is an American collector who holds rare and limited editioned graphics. Shulz possessed flyers, posters, programs regarding Nam June Paik’s exhibition as well as performance. Schulz also collected publications regarding artistic movement related to Nam June Paik (NJP), such as Fluxus. Curt Schulz collection spans the years 1958-2004 and consists of 0.6 cubic meter of records collected by Schulz. The collection includes publications regarding NJP and Fluxus. The collection also holds flyers, posters and programs of NJP’s exhibitions as well as performances.

Mieko Shiomi Collection

Collection Overview: Born in Japan, Mieko(Chieko) Shiomi (Shiomi) was a original member of Group Ongaku. Shiomi did fluxus performances with other fluxus artists in New York from 1964. Shiomi performed mail art event series from 1965 to 1975. Returned to music field in 1977, Shiomi experimented with theatrical music for voices and intermedia. Mieko Shiomi collection spans the years 1963-2006 and consists of 0.6 cubic meter of re-editioned fluxus work and records created as well as collected by Shiomi. The collection includes Fluxus prints, papers, and re-editioned objects and scores.

Ki Yong Jung Collection

Collection Overview: Ki Yong Jung (Jung), a founder of Gallery Won located in Seoul, is a renowned art collector. Jung dealt many artworks by famous artists including Nam June Paik (NJP), Joseph Beuys, Jean Fautrier, Joan Mitchell and among others. Jung introduced NJP’s video print works for the first time in Korea during the 1980s. Jung Ki Yong collection spans the years 1967-1996 and consists of 0.3 cubic meter of records hold by Jung. The collection includes photographs of exhibition and NJP’s, scrapbooks autographed by NJP, and publications on NJP.

Collection Overview: Born in Japan, Kazushi Ishida(石田一志)(Ishida) is a music critic. Studied piano at Musashino Academia Musicae(武蔵野音楽大学), Ishida earned Master’s degree majoring in Music studies. Ishida critiques and researches contemporary music, and lectures at Keio University(慶応大学) as well as Musashino Academia Musicae(武蔵野音楽大学). Publication includes Modernism Variations: Modern and Contemporary Music History in East Asia(2005) and among others. Kazushi Ishida collection spans the years 1956-2007 (bulk 1960-1964) and consists of 0.3 cubic meter of Sogetsu Art Center publications, hand-written notes, and monographs. Items were collected by Ishida and written by Ishida.

Mark Patsfall Collection

Collection Overview: Born in USA in 1949, Mark Patsfall (Patsfall) is an artist and gallery owner. Studied Fine Art at University of Cincinnati, Patsfall started Mark Patsfall Graphic, which is a current Clay Street Press, in 1981. Patsfall began collaboration with Nam June Paik (NJP) in 1984 and continued to 2000. Patsfall runs Clay Street Press in Cincinnati. Mark Patsfall collection spans the years 1986-1991 and consists of 10 pieces of printed photographs of NJP working at studio in Cincinnati. Each item is autographed by Patsfall in the back.

Philip Corner Collection

Collection Overview: Born in USA in 1933, Philip Corner (Corner) is a composer and artist. Studying composition and music, Corner has actively engaged in radical art movement including Fluxus in the 1960s. Corner served as a resident composer and musician to Judson Dance Theater and co-founded Tone Roads Chamber Ensemble, Sounds Out of Silent Spaces, and among others. Corner taught contemporary music and theory at New School in New York as well as Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. Philip Corner collection spans the years 1965-2010 and consists of Fluxus texts written and held by Corner; audio files of talk at The Kitchen and performance of Corner at PAM Music Festival; and scores, production notes, performance objects from concert, NJP Homage Concert in Seoul, in 2009.

Peter Brotzmann Collection

Collection Overview: : Born in Germany in 1941, Peter Brötzmann (Brötzmann) is a jazz saxophonist and artist. Studying painting in Wuppertal, Germany, Brötzmann for a while joined avant-garde movement including Fluxus. Brötzmann worked as an assistant to Nam June Paik (NJP) for both exhibitions, Exposition of Music – Electronic Television and Piano for All Senses, in 1963. Brötzmann moved on to the field of music and actively perform as a jazz musician. Peter Brötzmann collection spans the years 1963-2011 and consists of correspondence from NJP, a black and white photograph of NJP, and media items including CD and DVD of Brötzmann’s performance and documentary.

Ira Schneider Collection

Collection Overview: Ira Schneider (Schneider) is an American video artist. Beginning with film works in 1962, Schneider has worked with video since 1969. As a co-founder of Raindance Foundation, Schneider published Radical Software from 1970 to 1974. Participating in group exhibitions including TV as a Creative Medium at Howard Wise Gallery in 1969 and various solo shows, Schneider has lived and worked in Berlin since 1993. Ira Schneider collection comprises black and white photographs of Charlotte Moorman and Nam June Paik in 1969 and 1970.

Paul Garrin Collection

Collection Overview: Paul Garrin (hereafter Garrin) is a media artist from the US. Studying fine arts at the Cooper Union School of Art in New York, Garrin collaborated with Nam June Paik from 1982 to 1996, producing lots of media works that fill Paik’s video works. Highlights of the Paul Garrin collection are black and white photographs of Nam June Paik and Charlotte Moorman in 1982.

Klaus Barisch Collection

Collection Overview: Klaus Barisch is a photographer based in Germany. Studying at Cologne University in 1960, Klaus Barisch came into contact with the arts budding Fluxus artists. The Klaus Barisch collection comprises black and white photographs presenting Etude for Piano Forte (1960) performed at Atelier Mary Bauermeister in Cologne and Nam June Paik’s performance with Charlotte Moorman at WDR Funkhaus Cologne in 1980.
