Kang Sindae has tracked social and cultural changes and has portrayed the system in which the images of our society are produced and consumed. In this exhibition, Kang will showcase his new work of the same title.
The work Mood repeatedly shows characters who are running in the form of ‘animated GIFs.’ There is a scene that is repeated like a cliché in the opening of Japanese animations. The main characters of animations keep
walking or running forward in the same landscape. The characters in the Mood are also continuously walking or running between the frames of the unchanged landscape. The artist places elements that imply the political landscape of the present day and uses the above-mentioned cliché of animation. The almost a minute-long video is played on repeat, and ‘starts’ again and proceeds before we recognize when it ‘ends.’
The work seems to reflect today’s ‘mood’ without anything new, as if going round and round. We live in an era where the past repeats itself in the present and the present is delayed in the future, even though we feel like we are running to somewhere. Then where is the end of this ‘going forward’? Can we move forward from or into a new place?

2019 Random Access Project
The Nam June Paik Art Center presents the Random Access Project aimed at introducing promising artists who share Nam June Paik’s experimental artistic spirit and understanding trends of contemporary media art with the object of fulfilling Paik’s wish to make the Nam June Paik Art Center a space for young artists. The project is presented in a new format different from previous group exhibitions in 2010 and 2015. This year, random accesses to young artists are available in multiple places of the Nam June Paik Art Center, including the mezzanine and Eum-Space. The title of this project comes from Paik’s work Random Access that he showcased in his first solo exhibition entitled Exposition of Music: Electronic Television (1963). In this work, the tapes of the audio cassette exposed outside of the case are attached to the wall randomly and visitors can use and handle the metal head to make sound. Like Paik’s work, the Random Access Project is based on such keywords as spontaneity, indeterminacy, interaction and participation. In 2018, three artists, Ga Ram Kim, Moojin Brothers, Rémi Klemensiewicz, were included in this project. Following the projects by Park Seungsoon and eobchae × Sungsil Ryu in 2019, the last project of the year is the exhibition Mood by the artist Kang Sindae.
