Nam June Paik Art Center and the Museum of contemporary Art Busan presents Nam June Paik, Nam June Paik and Nam June Paik at busan MoCA, from November 30, 2024 to March 16, 2025.
Nam June Paik, Nam June Paik, and Nam June Paik is an expansive retrospective that illuminates the lasting impact of his artistic contributions.
What is it, then, that makes Nam June Paik’s art so captivating, even today? We seek the answer in the concept he originated: "the archaeology of the avant-garde." Paik continuously challenged himself with new technological media, from video and satellite to laser, while also reflecting on the roots of his artistic sensibilities and exploring their foundations. He referred to this process as "the archaeology of the avant-garde." This dialectical space, at the intersection of 'avant-garde' as the forefront of art symbolizing novelty and experimentation, and 'archaeology' as the excavation of the past, reveals Paik's unique artistic disposition.
This exhibition includes works and materials from the 1960s, rarely shown in Korea, as well as robot sculptures from the 1980s and large-scale video installations. Organized into important scenes that revisit key moments in Paik’s life and works, the exhibition will offer a fresh perspective on the avant-garde spirit that permeates his art.
