This is a performance of Seoul Express, a group of artists who worked together with CAMP for the “A Live Choreographed Camera” as part of the exhibition CAMP After Media Promises. In collaboration with actors, singers, and choreographers, it is a two-way live performance connecting Euljiro in Seoul with Nam June Paik Art Center in Yongin.
In Seoul, performers act with Georg Büchner’s play Woyzeck on stages set up at several locations captured by CAMP’s camera sequences in Euljiro. These scenes are broadcast live on the screen of Nam June Paik Art Center’s gallery that hosts a performance with recorded and onsite live sounds. The screen showing the acts are also overlaid with text and sound created by the artists in real time, and with a vocalist’s reading and singing in the gallery. Such familiar works as the activist song Janek Wiśniewski Padł and the rock band Starship’s We Built the City are performed.
Instead of an easy method of technically connecting two places, performers intervene in the CCTV camera’s movement programmed by CAMP in terms of time, speed, position, and text and sound are remotely and physically added to the screen. In this unique audiovisual experience, the exhibition and Euljiro are merged into a single spatiotemporal dimension. The performance held at 6 pm is an opportunity of viewing the nightscape of Euljiro taken by CAMP’s camera, which cannot be seen in the exhibition.
