Sound Pictogram @Open Codes, the accompanying program of Open Codes. Networked Commons by Insook Bae, is held at all times during the exhibition period at the entrance of the Gallery 2. ‘Pictogram’ is a language system(code) consisting of pictures that can be recognized with the same meaning regardless of who sees it. Insook Bae collected sounds from various everyday places around the Nam June Paik Art Center. Visitors can listen to the sound collected by the artist with iPads and draw images that come to mind in the form of a pictogram on the paper. The pictograms are completed with the participation of visitors and archived along with the sound corresponding to the web page below.

Insook Bae
Insook Bae gains ideas from simple principles or things commonly observed in everyday life and rearranges them in a new system, using music and sound as its materials. Her work is completed by changing the existing device or interpreting the identity of an object newly, inserting additional elements in it, and experimenting with it. The way sound is handled varies depending on whether it is an exhibition or a performance. Still, recently, the form in which the work is completed based on the audience’s active participation is preferred. Jungnang Sound Pictogram, 17717, released in 2015, is a work that contains the sounds of major places within the radius of artist’s daily lives in existing pictograms. The artist changed this work to an art education program in 2019 and expanded it to a work containing many people’s everyday lives. Since 2013, Insook Bae has been running Howlinglive, an open concert that visits various places to perform experimental playing.
