Whenever artistic ideas came to mind, Nam June Paik whimsically scribbled them out, unhesitatingly on whatever was available at the moment, on the margins of book pages or restaurant’s napkins. Yet he would also build ideas cumulatively in a notebook. This drawing book was donated by Shuya Abe, Paik’s technical collaborator. In this sketchbook, Paik drew a simplified form of the television with an antenna on each page, and inside the TV, four characters of Shuya Abe’s name was written, respectively. Also, the Chinese character ‘色’ was written repeatedly in various colors, on several pages. On the last page of the sketchbook, Paik left “THANX” inside the drawing of a television. This book seems to have been dedicated wholly to Abe.
